How to Choose the Right Pool Size and Shape for Your Space

How to Choose the Right Pool Size and Shape for Your Space

Lap pool, plunge pool or lagoon? A practical guide to sizing, shapes and how you will actually use it.

Start with how you will use it

Fitness swimmers need length – at least 12 m. Families with children want a generous shallow area. Entertainers want sun ledges, seating and lighting. Write down your top three uses first.

Measure the real space

Allow at least 1.2–1.5 m of decking around the pool, space for the plant room and access for excavation equipment.

Pick a shape that suits the architecture

Rectangular and L-shaped pools suit modern homes; kidney, freeform and lagoon shapes suit farmhouses and resorts; infinity edges suit sloped sites with a view.

Think about depth

Most homes are best served by 1.2–1.5 m depth throughout, with a deeper zone only if diving is planned.
